Obituary:
Daniel Sherfick, born Mar 22, 1822 in Harrison County, Ohio, married Aletha Moore in that county on May 24, 1853. They had five sons and two daughters, John Hl, Charles H., William E., Samuel S., and Corra B. Rennecker survive. He moved to Martin County thirty eith years ago. He died in Lost River Township, Martin County, Indiana, Jan. 19, 1907 and was buried in Waggoners Chapel Cemetery (same Township).
Daniel was 11 years older than his wife, and he was 31 years old when they married. She died about six weeks after her husband. They would have been buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Shoals, Indiana, but the backwater was up when he died in January, so they couldn't get there then. Waggoners Chapel is about a mile south of their Old Home Place in Lost River Township of Martin County, Indiana.
Everett Sherfick, father of Howard Sherfick, remembered his grandparents well, being about 14 when they died. They partly raised him. Daniel was tall and of heavy build and "Dutchy" in speech. Aletha was tall and slender. Everett remebered his grandfather as being very good with an ax and other wood working tools. Their first house was made of logs. When he was an old man, he built a frame type bungalo house where Howard was born. He cut two white oak trees and made clap boards for shingles for the roof. He kept them in seperate piles and put them on separate sides of the house so that he could see which trees made the best shingles. He died before he could find out. Samuel's son, John Sherfick, tore the house down in about 1942 and moved it to Indianapolis, Indiana. He put it back up and lived in it for years. Daniel Sherfick gathered and burned all loose limbs and chips with a passion. His farm was on a rock pile, but rocks didn't bother him in the least. He was supersticious and believed in and went by the "signs." There is evidence of the spring house and smoke house to this day at The Old Home Place in Lost River Township, Martin County, Indiana.
