Sarah BLUE

Name Sarah BLUE Born 18 Nov 1799 Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio, USA Gender Female Buried 1852 Liberty Hill Cemetery, Aurelius Township, Washington County, Ohio, USA Died 14 Oct 1852 Washington County, Ohio, USA Notes - I believe that Sarah was born Sarah Blue Zollars. She had a child by a Sadler, and then she married Benjamin Sherfick. In the fall of 2007 I traveled to Ohio to hunt for her grave. It was found as I expected--in the family plot of Frederick Zollars and his wife, Mary Hahn Zollars. I think but cannot prove that she was their daughter. First of all an older daughter, between 10-15, was found in the Frederick Zollars' household during the 1810 census. I also found a genealogy journal from Martin Co., Indiana historian, Ruby Stiles, written in the 1970's that stated that it was common knowledge that the Zollars brothers (Jacob and Zepaniah B.) and the sons of Benjamin Sherfick were first cousins. These two sons of Frederick and Mary H. Zollars traveled to Shoals with Benjamin Sherfick 18 years after the death of Sarah. After Benjamin's death, the Zollars brothers were neighbors to Daniel. Ms. Stiles projected 5 possible ways for the Zollars and Sherficks to be cousins. At that time Ms. Stiles was unaware of the last names of the Zollars wives; they are known now (Porter and Shilling respectively) and that connection cannot be made.
Also, in the same family plot at the cemetery near Sarah were the children of Abram and Caroline Zollars (Mary, Frederick, Elizabeth, and Frank); Jacob and Elizabeth Zollar's son, Nathan; and Sarah's grandchildren, Benny, Phoebe, and Harry Drum. Beside Sarah was a grave with a marker that was fallen and upside-down. I could not lift it to see the name, but it probably was Sarah's daughter Mary Ann Sherfick. Behind Sarah's grave was a grave with a small marker that said Sherfick Infant. This was the Liberty Hill Cemetery, also known as Hill Grove Cemetery, in Washington Co., Ohio.
Sarah was listed a Blue on her marriage license, although the book that I found her marriage to Benjamin lists their name as Sharfick. I'm not sure where the Blue name came from, if she was really born a Blue, if she was married to a Blue briefly, or perhaps it was her middle name. Several of Ben and Sarah's children have middle names that are surnames.
Also I found her name as "Sally," but Sally is a common nickname for Sarah in the 1800s. I also had Catherine as a middle name at one time, but I can't find the original post so I took it off.
Finally, it is listed on John Miller Sherfick's obituary that his mother was a Zollars. This is also listed on her son's death record:
Martin Co. Death Records
John M. Sherfick died 3-2-1918 in Shoals
Born: 4-11-1832 in Ohio. Married Eliza
Lobar pneumonia - Dr. H. W. Shirley, Shoals, IN
Buried: Spring Hill Cemetery - Shoals, IN, by Baker Undertakers.
Parents: Benjamin Sherfick, Germany and Zollars.
In 1821 Ben married Sarah in Harrison Co. Ohio. Found his name in a book of Ohio marriage licenses (OHIO MARRIAGES RECORDED IN COUNTY COURTS; 1 Jan 1821 - 31 Dec 1830: An Index By the Ohio Genealogical Society, page 1530), but it was spelled Sharfick. They were married on 6 Sep 1821 by John Wagoner, Justice of Peace.
Sarah and Benjamin lived in Washington Co. Ohio after 1822, and she is buried there with one child and a few grandchildren in Hill Grove Cemetery. Hill Grove Cemetery is now known as Liberty Hill Cemetery. It is over-run with weeds and had been vandalized when I visited it in 2007. Mary Anne Sherfick died 1853 and never married. I believe she is buried beside her although the stone was overturned. It will take a crowbar on my next visit there to check if it is for sure Mary Anne.
A baby buried right behind her grave is her son's baby. Her son, John Miller Sherfick, lost baby in 1864, the date of this baby's death. The other grandchildren are Rebecca Sherfick Drum's children.
Although no other child is buried at Hill Grove/Liberty, another son is buried nearby in Feldner Cemetery, Freddie Sherfick died 1863 in wounds from Civil War.
Sarah may have lived in Pennsylvania at one time as Daniel lists her birth as Penn. in the 1900 Indiana census. Jacob lists her in the Colorado 1900 census as being born in Penn. too. Samuel Sherfick lists his mother as being born in Penn in the 1900 Kansas census.
