    Notes
    • In 1850 living in Jackson Township, Washington Co., Indiana with wife Elizabeth Ann (Beck), daugthers Sarah E (2) and Mary M (1) and brother John Wade's oldest son, Hampton Wade (9). Next door is Andrew (55) and Rebecca Beck (40). This is Elizabeth's father and stepmother. There are several Beck families in the area as well. He is listed as being a merchant.

He mentions brother John W. Wade in his will on page 521-522 of Will Record Book of Washington County, Indiana (1808-1902), dated 15 Oct 1864 and probated on 7 Jan 1865. His wife was mentioned but not by name, although Elizabeth A. Wade signed the document. The will also mentioned these minor children--boys John B. and Smith D.; girls Sarah E., Mary M. Virginia A. Susan E., Rosey B., and Martha A. Witnesses were Thomas D. Voyles and John W. Wade.

      From Lola Stephenson Louden:
Elijah Brown Wade and Elizabeth Ann Wade had a log house, prior to the Civil War, at the site of the larger frame house which was built during the war. Elijah Wade, as a young married man, cut yellow poplar lumber for a barn. At that time the "knights of the Golden Circle" were very numerous in Washington County. There were about 1100 members at the time. They were known to hold meetings and drill in a deep woods a few miles west of Elijah's home. Elijah Wade, however, did not join them. When they heard that he was planning to build a barn they sent him word if he did, it would be burned. The men in Washington County and other Southern Indiana counties who did not join the "Knights" and do secret military training were not protected in life or property.

Elijah decided instead to build a house with the yellow poplar lumber. It was a large, three room house with a fireplace in each room. He set out two rows of cedar trees around the house as a wind break. On the east side of the house was a long, wide porch. There was a well down east of the house and the little fruit drying house near the well.

Elijah Wade was quite a mechanic as well as a good hunter. He made most of their living, during the winters, from tanned hides and fur from many animals. Being subjected to much inclement weather caused "lung fever" to develop which caused his death at the age of 40. His wife Elizabeth was left as a widow with eight children. The youngest, Martha Ann was only seven months old.

    Elijah Brown Wade (most likely)
Not 100% sure, but this stone is immediately between Elizabeth Beck Wade and their children. I can read Wade, but the rest is worn. It is significantly more aged than Elizabeth's, but she died 35 years after Elijah. She never remarried.

Beck's Hill, the settlement as it was known, within a short time, became the social center as families from a thirty mile radius brought their corn to Beck's Mill to be ground into cornmeal.
