Obituary:
Charles Sherfick Aged Resident Killed By Train
Charles M. Sherfick, age 86 years, a retired farmer, was killed instantly about 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, when he was struck by the west-bound Baltimore& Ohio Train No. 3 at the Main Street crossing, in Shoals. He suffered a fractured skull, crushed chest, fracture of both legs and both arms and multiple other bruises and injuries.
Mrs. Eddie Sherfick was an unwilling eye witness of the tragedy. She was waiting in her car on the south side of the tracks for the train to pass and gave the flollowing account of the accident:
"Mr. Sherfick was going north on the sidewalk to the east of Main Street. When I first saw him, he was between the switch tracks and the main tracks. He walked directly in front of the train with his head down. I don't think he even saw or heard the train. The engineer blew and blew the whistle, but if Mr. Sherfick heard it, he gave no sign. I turned off the motor of my car and got out and called to James Beard, who was coming down the street, that the train had hit a man. At that time I did not know who it was who had been killed."
The impact threw the body across the street, a distance of about twenty-five feet, and into a late model Chevrolet car, which was parked on the west side of Main Street, facing south. The frame of he car was thrown out of line and the car was splattered with blood. It was owned by Thomas E. Harder.
According to witnesses north of the crossing, Mr. Sherfick was almost across the track when hit and only a few more steps would have carried him to safety. Harry Mendell of Seymour was the engineer and N. R. Borden, of Washington, was the conductor of the train.
