Bedford native donated millions to IU; honors college named for him.

A Bedford native who gave millions of dollars to Indiana University, his alma mater, has died at the age of 89.

Edward L. Hutton died Tuesday at his home in Indian Hill, Ohio. He was born in Bedford in 1919. He earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from IU.

Hutton was a philanthropist and businessman who in 2003 gave IU $9 million to establish an endowment for international study. In 2005, the university's trustees renamed its honors college to honor Hutton.

"We are very, very saddened by this," IU Provost Karen Hanson said Wednesday. She was dean of IU's Hutton Honors College before becoming provost, and worked closely with Hutton. "It was lovely to work with him."

The new Edward L. Hutton Honors College at the corner of Woodlawn Avenue and Seventh Street was completed just this semester.

?He did see it. And he did visit it during construction, Hanson said. "There would be times he would come in, and they'd get him a chair and he'd stay for a while to see how things were shaping up."

Hutton was looking forward to the new building's dedication, she said. "It's set for April 8. He picked that date. It will clearly be a memorial now."

Hutton earned both of his degrees from IU before joining the U.S. Army and serving in Germany. He later was chairman of the board and CEO of Chemed Corp. and Omnicare Inc. in Cincinnati.

He has endowed many scholarships for IU students over the years, Hanson said.

"One of the things that's so amazing about him is he was a self-made man who came from great poverty in Bedford, Indiana." Through 'get up and go,' he accomplished great things," she said.

"He had a talent for seeking out and listening to mentors. He wanted to find a way of repaying the world for the things the world gave him."

Hutton was instrumental in the creation of the Lawrence County Museum of History and the Edward L. Hutton Research Library, and he was generous in funding scholarships for Bedford North Lawrence High School students.

Surviving Hutton are his wife, three children and his grandchildren.

A memorial service in his honor will be held in the spring.

Mr Hutton wrote this book and a few other editions about the Huttons, who immigrated to America from Ireland. Frank Hutton is mentioned on page 62. Edward L. Hutton was my third cousin, once removed. He donated millions of dollars to Indiana University and created the Lawrence County Museum of History on the Square in Downtown Bedford, Indiana.
