    Notes
    • Moved to Vernon Co., Missouri in 1858 with wife and children.

William Gabbert was a famous Guerilla or Bushwacker in Vernon Co, Missouri during the Civil War. There is a Bushwacker Museum and Vernon County Historical Society. He was killed in the Civil War.

From Jones Schemmel: live in Fort Worth, Texas - close to where some of the Gabbert descendents moved after they left Missouri. William Gabbert was my Great X4 grandfather. His son, John married Lennora (Lenore) Mayfield. They were my great x3 grandparents. Lennora was pregnant with twins (one of them being my great-great grandfather, John Crawford Gabbert) when John was killed in the civil war. John Crawford is buried here in the old Grapevine Cemetery, as well as his mother, Lennora. (She had married a man named Vickers after her husband was killed).

Buried 4 miles south of Bentonville near Walnut Springs.

A great website for info about the Gabberts can be found at Jon Lockhart's website called Family Ramblings. His ancestor Rachel Gabbert was the oldest sister of William and Polly Gabbert. Click here for Family Ramblings blog!

William and Rebecca's siblings were also married. Rebecca's brother was John William Wade, and William's sister was John's wife, Mary or Polly Gabbert. This photo was received from a double cousin from Glendale, Arizona, Marlene Versluis. Thanks so much!!! Since George W. Wade, Sr. is the only Great Grandparent that I don't have a photo for, I appreciate this a lot. This couple would be my Great Grandfather's Aunt and Uncle, both blood relatives!

We also have a new book that was just released this month, “Fire and Sword, A Story of a Missouri County in the Civil War”, for $19.95. This book is not fiction but is a compellation of articles about events in Vernon County during the War. The Gabberts and Mayfields are in several of the articles. This book would give you a pretty clear picture of what life was like for them during those very tumultuous years.
