    • Lawyer, Gen & Commander Indiana militia, senator:
      John DePauw had been a lawyer, judge, and a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention. He was elected four times to the Indiana legislature before his death in 1838, when Washington was just 16.

      Delegate to Indiana state constitutional convention, 1816; member of Indiana state senate, 1816-19, 1825-26, 1829-32; candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Indiana, 1819; member of Indiana state house of representatives, 1827-28, 1836-37. Member, Freemasons. Died in Grand Gulf, Claiborne County, Miss., January 25, 1838.

      General John DePauw was appointed in 1814 by the territorial legislature as the agent to lay out the town of Salem, to advertise and sell town lots. The plat of Salem was drafted by him and shown 142 lots of the usual size and six large ones. (From the record of the family in the possession of Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Bartlett, printed in the Sun. They were daughters of Keziah DePauw and Zachariah Collier)

      From the Salem Democrat, September 20, 1876:
      General John DePauw, the agent for the sale of the lots in Salem, after it was laid out, and who was born in Kentucky on March 11, 1785, and died January 25, 1838 at Grand Gulf, Mississippi (age 52 years, 10 months and 14 days). He was an Indian fighter, a merchant, and trader. He was also sensator from this county, and also clerk. He was the father of W. C. DePauw and several other children. One of his daughters married Judge John F. Keyes, another Samuel Crawford, one a Morton, and one a Dodd. He was at the time of his death, aged fifty-two years, ten months and fourteen days.

      From the Washington Republican, August 29, 1838:
      Notice is hereby given, that the undersigned has taken out Letters of Administration upon the Estate of John DePauw, deceased, late of Washington County, Indiana. All persons having claims against said Estate, are requested to present them duly authenticated for settlement; and all persons indebted to the Estate are respectfully invited to call and settle them immediately, or they willl be collected according to the law. The Estate is solvent.
